In astrology, a nakshatra is a section of the sky that the Moon appears to travel through. The whole sky is divided into 27 parts, and each part has a name. These are also called birth stars or lunar mansions.

How the 27 nakshatras are made

The 360-degree sky is divided into 27 equal parts. Each nakshatra covers 13 degrees 20 minutes. Each nakshatra is then divided into four padas, so each pada is 3 degrees 20 minutes. The Moon crosses one nakshatra in about two and a half days.

What a pada means

A pada is one quarter of a nakshatra. The four padas are linked to the sound of a name, the navamsa sign and some traits. When a nakshatra guide mentions the “first pada” or “third pada”, it means that particular quarter of the nakshatra.

How the birth nakshatra is found

The nakshatra the Moon was in at the moment of birth is your birth nakshatra. You need three things: date of birth, time of birth and birth city. The more accurate the time, the more accurate the nakshatra and pada. If the birth time is unknown, the Moon may have moved from one nakshatra to another during the day, so the result is not treated as fixed.

What nakshatras are used for

Nakshatras are used in kundli matching, Vimshottari dasha, muhurat and understanding temperament. In matching, the nakshatra gives factors such as gana, yoni and nadi. In dasha, your birth nakshatra sets the starting mahadasha. In muhurat, tradition decides which nakshatra suits which kind of work.

One thing to keep in mind

A nakshatra-based trait is a hint, not a full personality. Two people with the same nakshatra can be very different because their upbringing, sign and other planets differ. Read it as entertainment and general understanding, not as a way to judge someone.

Find your nakshatra

If you know your birth time, enter your details in the nakshatra finder. You will get the nakshatra, pada, ruling planet and a full guide. If the time is unknown, do not treat a guessed result as final.

Common questions

Questions on this article

How do I find my birth nakshatra?

Your date of birth, exact birth time and city are used to calculate the Moon’s position. That gives the nakshatra and pada. Our nakshatra finder does this inside your browser.

Are sun sign and nakshatra the same?

No. The sun sign comes from the Sun’s position, while the birth nakshatra comes from the Moon’s position. So your sun sign and nakshatra can be different.

Can a nakshatra name change?

A birth nakshatra is calculated for the moment of birth, so it does not change. A different calculation method or an incorrect birth time can change the result.
