What a panchang is
A panchang is a daily astrological calendar made of five parts: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana. Sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kaal and Abhijit are given alongside.
How to read it
For everyday planning, tithi and nakshatra are enough. For an auspicious task, look at tithi, nakshatra, Rahu Kaal and Abhijit together. Do not decide from one part alone, and cross-check your city’s local panchang.
One thing to remember
A panchang is a planning aid, not a source of fear. A period being called “inauspicious” should not stop necessary work. Give weight to your comfort, health and family tradition too.
Common questions
What are the five parts of a panchang?
Tithi, vara (weekday), nakshatra, yoga and karana. These five make a panchang. Sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kaal and Abhijit are given alongside.
What should be avoided during Rahu Kaal?
Tradition suggests avoiding new beginnings, auspicious work or big transactions during Rahu Kaal. It does not mean the whole day is bad. Do necessary work without fear.
Does every city have a different panchang?
Sunrise and sunset change with location, so Rahu Kaal and Abhijit times also change. Tithi and nakshatra mostly stay similar, but the local panchang is the better reference.
What time is the panchang calculated for?
The panchang here is calculated for sunrise on that day. Tithi and nakshatra can change during the day, so check the time as well for an important task.
The panchang is calculated from the sidereal positions of the Sun and Moon, using Lahiri ayanamsa. Sunrise comes from local latitude and longitude.
