Jupiter Transit 2027: Exalted Jupiter Returns Retrograde, and the Year's Four Parts
In 2027 Jupiter changes signs three times, returning to its exaltation sign Cancer in retrograde motion; the dates are checked against three sources, and the year counts as four periods, not three.
2027 will stand apart in the history of Jupiter transits: Jupiter changes signs three times, and into Cancer, its exaltation sign, where the tradition counts it strongest, it enters not by moving forward but by returning retrograde. This article begins with the dates, checked across three sources; then the mechanics of the retrograde return; then the reading framework, where three less-publicised rules from Phaladeepika chapter 26 appear; and at the end two computations of our own: a count of favourable days for every Moon sign, and an inconsistency caught in one source's nakshatra column. One thing first: in 2027 Jupiter never steps into its own signs (Sagittarius, Pisces), and stays away from Capricorn, its sign of debilitation, too.
The dates, checked against three sources
First the base table on which all three sources agree. Sidereal (Lahiri) Jupiter: entered Leo on 31 October 2026; retrograde entry into Cancer on 25 January 2027; direct return into Leo on 26 June 2027; entry into Virgo on 26 November 2027, where it stays until 28 February 2028. The spans: the first Leo stretch 86 days (24 of them in this year), Cancer 152 days, the second Leo stretch 153 days, and the last 35 days of the year in Virgo. On the hours the sources part. For the 25 January entry: drikpanchang 00:52 IST, cosmiqeai 01:31 IST, astromitra 02:12 IST; vedara publishes its computation to the minute in UTC, 2027-01-24T20:02Z, which in our conversion is 01:32 IST. For 26 June, vedara's 23:50 UTC converts in ours to 05:20 IST, astromitra says 04:50, drikpanchang 05:43. For 26 November, vedara 13:16 UTC = 18:46 IST, astromitra 18:06, drikpanchang 19:17, cosmiqeai 18:45. The spread is about one to one and a half hours; vedara itself names the causes: zodiac, ayanamsa and rounding, and the effect of the time zone on the date. All three sources are sidereal-Lahiri, so the days are one; read the hour-level differences as the limit of the claims, not as anyone's error. vedara's method is also on record: Swiss Ephemeris 2.10.03, Lahiri, refined by bisection to the minute; and its licence is CC BY 4.0.
Why Jupiter went back: the mechanics
nidarshanavedh keeps the mechanics clean. Jupiter circles the zodiac in about twelve years; the Earth overtakes it once every thirteen months or so, so Jupiter appears to stop, drift backwards for about four months, and stop again before moving on; Jupiter itself never reverses. When that drift falls close to a sign boundary, the planet crosses the line, retreats over it, and crosses again later. 2027 is exactly this case: having climbed only a few degrees into Leo, Jupiter turned retrograde at 2°47 on 13 December 2026, crossed back into Cancer on 25 January, turned direct at 22°45 of Cancer on 13 April 2027, and climbed back into Leo on 26 June. The result: for about five months the Jupiter of 2027 is back in the sign of 2026. One more boundary: from 16 August to 15 September 2027 Jupiter is combust (cosmiqeai's boundary runs 17 August to 14 September; the one-day difference stays on record), too close to the Sun to be seen; panchang traditions avoid Jupiter-blessing ceremonies such as weddings in these days, with strictness varying by tradition.
Exalted, but retrograde: two vocabularies of strength
Cancer is Jupiter's exaltation sign; there the tradition counts it strongest. Leo is the sign of the Sun, a friend of Jupiter; Virgo belongs to Mercury, and nidarshanavedh, citing BPHS chapter 3, verse 55 (Santhanam edition), records Mercury as an enemy of Jupiter, so the tradition reads Jupiter in Virgo as less comfortable. Now the peculiarity of 2027: the exaltation entry happens in retrograde motion. cosmiqeai records that the texts hold a retrograde planet to gain strength, cheshta bala; so in one vocabulary retrogression adds strength. At the same time nidarshanavedh cautions the other way: this retrograde dip is the part of the year that most confuses readers of a single yearly horoscope. Both are recorded statements; our conclusion is only this: "exalted Jupiter" is no single-sounding period - from 25 January to 13 April it is retrograde-exalted, after that direct-exalted, and reading the two apart is what the sources' own framework supports. And Phaladeepika 26.31-32 (from cosmiqeai's compilation) multiplies dignity by house: even in an unfavourable house a planet in exaltation or its own sign does no harm, and even in a favourable house a debilitated or enemy-sign planet gives nothing. The direct application in 2027: for the Moon signs from which the Cancer Jupiter sits in an unfavourable house (the 12th from Leo, the 8th from Sagittarius), the textual rule calls Jupiter not "fruitless despite exaltation" but "harm-free"; the difference is subtle but on record.
The framework of gochar reading: house, vedha, fruitful third
The reading rule is house-counting from the Moon sign, and here all three interpretive sources are one. The classical list: Jupiter is favourable in the 2nd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th from the Moon. panchangbodh writes the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 10th as "mixed" and the 6th, 8th and 12th as "slow progress"; cosmiqeai's Phaladeepika-26 table calls those plainly "not good" - the 4th, for instance, speaks of sorrow through relatives and a caution about property. The two levels of wording stay on record; one list, two voices. Above them two less-heard rules, both from cosmiqeai's Phaladeepika compilation. First, vedha (26.7): the good results of the 2nd, 11th, 9th, 5th and 7th hold only if no other planet is then transiting the 12th, 8th, 10th, 4th and 3rd from the Moon respectively; so even a favourable transit can be obstructed. Second, the fruitful third (26.25): Jupiter bears fruit in the middle third of a sign, Saturn in the last, Rahu throughout the passage; the verse does not name Ketu. And the uppermost limit, in nidarshanavedh's words: a transit describes a climate, not an event; the outcome is decided by your own chart and the running dasha. Jupiter's significations: growth, learning, teachers, children, advice and fortune; the house shows where those themes are in play.
The houses from each Moon sign: the full table
The four house sequences of 2027 for every Moon sign, from the unanimous nidarshanavedh and cosmiqeai table; the order is: 1-25 January (Leo), 25 January-26 June (Cancer), 26 June-26 November (Leo), from 26 November (Virgo). Aries: 5, 4, 5, 6. Taurus: 4, 3, 4, 5. Gemini: 3, 2, 3, 4. Cancer: 2, 1, 2, 3. Leo: 1, 12, 1, 2. Virgo: 12, 11, 12, 1. Libra: 11, 10, 11, 12. Scorpio: 10, 9, 10, 11. Sagittarius: 9, 8, 9, 10. Capricorn: 8, 7, 8, 9. Aquarius: 7, 6, 7, 8. Pisces: 6, 5, 6, 7. How to read: match your houses against the favourable list 2, 5, 7, 9, 11; the house in the two Leo stretches is the same, so the meaning of the retrograde dip is that the Cancer-period house returns, five months later, to that same Leo house, like a chapter that pauses and reopens. The house themes in brief: 1 self and direction, 2 wealth-family-speech, 3 effort-siblings, 4 home-mother-property, 5 children-learning-creativity, 6 routine-rivals, 7 partner-travel, 8 transformation-hidden, 9 fortune-teachers-dharma, 10 work-position, 11 gains-friends, 12 expenditure-distance.
Counting the favourable days: our own computation
Now the counting, which we did ourselves. The spans from the table above; the house sequence for every Moon sign from the unanimous nidarshanavedh and cosmiqeai table (Aries: 5, 4, 5, 6; Taurus: 4, 3, 4, 5; and so on); the favourable list 2, 5, 7, 9, 11. The results: the most favourable days belong to Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces Moons, 187 days (the 9th or 7th in the Cancer stretch, and the 11th or 9th in the Virgo stretch); then Aries, Cancer, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius, 177 days; Gemini and Virgo, 152 days (only the Cancer stretch favourable: the 2nd and the 11th); and Taurus and Leo, only 35 days (the 5th and the 2nd in the Virgo stretch). cosmiqeai's own summary says 188, 177 and 141 days: the first two figures are of the same order as our count (187 versus 188 is one day of inclusive counting), but its "141 for the rest" does not match our computation; we keep our own count, recording the difference. The reader can verify this in two minutes: write the four houses of your row, add the days of the favourable ones. And one limit states itself: this count is of the house rule alone; vedha, dasha and the birth chart are not in it.
An inconsistency in one source's nakshatra column
astromitra accompanies its table with a nakshatra column in which the 25 January Cancer entry appears under "Ashlesha". That does not sit with the arithmetic, and this check is our own. Cancer begins at 90 degrees of the zodiac; a nakshatra spans 13 degrees 20 minutes, and 90 degrees falls at six and three-quarter nakshatras, that is, in the fourth pada of the seventh nakshatra, Punarvasu, long before Ashlesha (106°40 to 120°). The same column also shows the 85-day Leo passage under "Magha" alone, though Magha covers only the first 13°20 of Leo. The column is probably tied to the sign rows rather than computed from nakshatra boundaries. The lesson: even where the sign dates verify across three sources, the auxiliary columns need their own check; and if you need the nakshatra of a sign entry, work the degree arithmetic yourself.
What follows: the start of 2028
The Virgo stay too opens in the same frame as the Cancer stay did, and nidarshanavedh's table records it: Jupiter turns retrograde at 3°16 of Virgo on 12 January 2028 and slips back into Leo for a spell on 28 February 2028. So the Virgo date of 26 November 2027 is not a final settled entry either; it too opens with a dip. When you write down your Jupiter position at the end of 2027, keep this line with it, or the return of February 2028 will feel sudden. This pattern is the most practical lesson of this article: every Jupiter sign entry near a boundary stays provisional, and the settled date is the one that comes after the direct station.
Common confusions
First confusion: from 25 January "exalted Jupiter" is on, good for everyone. Three corrections: the house rule is per Moon sign; Phaladeepika's dignity-times-house multiplication; and vedha. Second confusion: a retrograde Jupiter is weak. The textual view records the opposite, cheshta bala; but for practical reading note nidarshanavedh's restraint. Third: Jupiter will also be in its own sign in 2027. No; Sagittarius and Pisces entries in 2027 are zero. Fourth: a combust Jupiter is a small thing. For marriage muhurts this very period is the tradition's main avoidance. Fifth: one horoscope for the whole year. nidarshanavedh writes it precisely: in a year with a retrograde dip, a Moon sign's house changes four times; a one-line horoscope is incomplete by structure. Sixth: a date disagreement means someone erred. Among vedara's listed causes are rounding and time zone too; the day is one, the hours differ.
Practical use
First, write your four periods: your Moon sign's row from the house table above; include the first Leo stretch for 1-25 January. Second, read the Cancer period in two parts: retrograde from 25 January to 13 April, direct after that; and mark the combustion of August-September separately. Third, use the count with its limit: favourable days are a rhythm, not a promise; vedha and dasha sit above. Fourth, for muhurt decisions: for ceremonies that call for Jupiter's blessing, ask your own family or priestly tradition; the sources themselves acknowledge that strictness varies. Fifth, when citing dates: wherever you write a 2027 Jupiter date, write the source and the time zone with it; "25 January" is right in sidereal Lahiri IST, not in the tropical zodiac or another ayanamsa.
Three questions before any 2027 Jupiter reading: first, which zodiac and ayanamsa do the dates belong to; a tropical table will tell a sidereal reader a story one sign ahead. Second, does the reading treat the year as one period or as four; a one-period reading loses the retrograde dip. Third, is the favourable-unfavourable talk bounded by the house rule or does it reach vedha and dasha; Phaladeepika's framework is the second, and the sources' own limit notes say the same.
