Vastu for home: directions, rooms and easy corrections
Direction, room and correction - vastu in plain words, without fear.
Vastu shastra ties the home to eight directions. Its core idea is simple: arrange the rooms in step with the sun, wind and light. This page gives the traditional rules in plain words; where a rule is practical we say so, and where it is belief we say that too.
The traditional meaning of the eight directions
| Direction | Traditional sign | Use in the home |
|---|---|---|
| North | Wealth and opportunity (Kubera) | Locker, cabinet, work corner |
| Northeast (Ishanya) | Purity and the divine | Prayer room, meditation, water source |
| East | Health and beginnings (the Sun) | Main door, living room, windows |
| Southeast (Agneya) | Fire | Kitchen, electrical appliances |
| South | Stability and rest (Yama) | Master bedroom, heavy storage |
| Southwest (Nairitya) | Weight and strength | Heavy furniture, owner's room |
| West | Gain and children (Varuna) | Dining room, children's room |
| Northwest (Vayavya) | Wind and movement | Guest room, large windows |
Traditional direction of the main rooms
Main door: east or north is held best; practically, keep the door clean, lit and unblocked. Kitchen: southeast corner; the stove facing east is the tradition. Bedroom: south or southwest; sleeping with the head to the south or east is the custom. Prayer space: northeast corner; a clean, raised place. Study: face east or north while sitting. Toilet: northwest or west; tradition keeps it away from the northeast.
Corrections without demolition
- Turning the bed, study table and work chair is the easiest fix.
- Keep the entrance clean, lit and named; that is vastu and courtesy both.
- Keep the northeast corner free and clean; shift heavy storage to the southwest.
- Fix the small things - a dead clock, a dried plant, a dripping tap; their effect on the mind is direct.
- Tradition keeps fire (stove) and water (sink) apart in the kitchen; create distance where possible.
A straight word
Some vastu rules grew from experience with weather and light; some are pure belief. Do not hold any rule so tightly that the peace of the home is lost. A home's real direction is set by the behaviour of the people in it. Before any demolition or big expense on advice, look at both your need and your pocket.
Questions on this article
Is a non-vastu home unlucky?
No. Vastu is a traditional system that tries to keep a home in step with direction and light. Lakhs of homes ignore it and stay happy. Treat it as an improvement list, not a scare.
How do I fix vastu in a rented home?
A lot can change without construction: turn the bed, study table and kitchen use toward better directions, keep the prayer space in the northeast, keep the entrance clean and lit. That is the practical route in a rented home.
What is vastu’s relation to science?
Some parts are practical: an east window brings morning light, a south wall blocks heat. The rest is tradition and belief, without laboratory proof. We keep the two separate.
